Indeed. The project management and cultural machinations I’ve seen enforced on teams I’ve worked on over the years almost feel like they’re designed intentionally to make it as difficult as possible to provide value to the organization. Never got it.

But I think an emphasis on communication is warranted. A lot of coding really does require concentration and space to think. Some problems on the other hand, are better solved by working with a team or talking to rubber ducks. You have to do both. It’s the same for all knowledge work.

I think software development has suffered from a culture of under-communication, which is why you see such a focus on it. Too many developers have spent way too much time writing great code that does the wrong thing. I think we can be less wasteful if we ask more questions and communicate better…then concentrate.
